Chapter Sixteen
Carme turned to me and I nodded. âLet her in.â
She grabbed the keys. Liam flanked her as she opened the door. Worried the ghosts might try to come in, I held my breath, not that they needed an open door. They didnât enter. They hovered outside the shop and stared at me expectantly through the window.
Carme locked the door again and I waved our bone collector over. She wore similar clothes to before, black jeans and a dark hoodie. This time, she had a large black duffel bag. She looked rough, like maybe she hadnât slept or eaten since sheâd last been here.
I held a hand out toward the back corner. âWould you like to sit?â
She gave a cautious glance around, then nodded.
Moving slowly and carefully like I might spook her, I made my way to the back. Liam went to follow us, and I pointed at the door, trying to shoo him out. He rolled his eyes at me and stayed with Carme at the counter.
âWhatâs your name?â I asked after we sat. âWeâve been calling you our bone collector.â She gave a snort-laugh and put her bag at her feet.
âI wanted to give you a better name,â Carme said, quite serious.
âIâm not sure if thatâs endearing or not.â She held out her hand across the space between us. âAndrea.â
âIâm Amy,â I replied. Her hand was cold and a bit clammy as we shook. âWelcome back.â
âDidnât think I would be, butâ¦â She reached down, unzipped her backpack and pulled out a skull. She shoved it toward me. âTake it. I donât want it.â
I tucked my feet up under me and moved back in the chair as far as I could. âWe donât want it either.â
She put it on the floor by her feet then used both hands to dump her bag out. âNone of it.â Bones clacked and clattered out onto the rug.
Carme rushed over. âMaybe we want it.â She crouched down for a closer look.
âCarme,â I snapped.
âWhat? Might be cool in the shop,â she replied. âThese all human?â Andrea nodded.
With my feet still tucked up on the chair, I leaned to put a hand between Carme and the pile of bones. âLetâs find out why Andrea doesnât want them, first. Donât touch them.â
Carme scoffed but sat down on the rug. Liam joined us and stood behind Carme.
I sat back. âSo?â
Andrea let out a long breath. âIf this is why things are happening to me, I donât want them.â
âWhat is happening to you?â
She chewed her lower lip a couple times. âIâve been having blackouts. Before you ask, no, itâs not drugs or alcohol. I donât know when the blackouts are going to hit or why. I just wake up after.â
âHave you seen a doctor?â I asked.
âI donât think they can help. When I wake up, Iâve written things. At first, it was with whatever was lying around, but then I started leaving out paper and a pen.â
Carme bounced on her butt. âAutomatic writing.â
âThat would be a good name for it,â Andrea said.
